Stargazing in Namibia
Some of the darkest, clearest night skies on Earth. Fall asleep under the Milky Way on a desert star bed, watch the Southern Cross rise over the dunes and add a night under the stars to your Namibia safari.
One of the best places on Earth to see the stars
Namibia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world. Away from the towns there is almost no artificial light, the desert air is dry and the skies are clear for most of the year. When the sun sets over the Namib, the stars do not slowly appear; the whole sky fills with them.
The NamibRand Nature Reserve, south of Sossusvlei, was named Africa's first International Dark Sky Reserve in 2012, with the top Gold Tier rating for the quality of its night sky. You do not need a telescope or any knowledge of astronomy. Lie back on a star bed, let your eyes adjust and the Milky Way stretches from one horizon to the other.
What you can see in the Namibian night sky
- The Milky Way, so bright it casts a soft glow over the sand
- The Southern Cross, Scorpius and Centaurus
- The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two neighbouring galaxies seen only from the southern hemisphere
- The Eta Carinae Nebula, planets and shooting stars
From our team
We do not just sell these experiences, we sleep out under them. Our team has spent nights at Namib Dune Star Camp, waking up on the deck with nothing but the dunes and the fading stars around us, and we are heading to Little Kulala next to sleep on its rooftop.
That is why we recommend adding at least one night under the stars to any Sossusvlei trip. Most travellers come for the red dunes. They leave talking about the night sky.
The Best Places to Sleep Under the Stars in Namibia
Namibia's skies are dark almost everywhere, but these are the places and lodges where the night sky becomes part of the stay, from wheel-out star beds to rooftop sleep-outs and guided stargazing.
Sossusvlei & the Namib Desert
The Namib is the heart of stargazing in Namibia. Spend your days on the dunes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, and your nights under one of the darkest skies in the world, close to the NamibRand Dark Sky Reserve.
Namib Dune Star Camp

- Private rooftop with a roll-out star bed at every suite

Best Time for Stargazing in Namibia
Best months
The dry season from May to October brings the clearest, most reliable skies. Skies are good all year, but summer (November to April) can bring afternoon clouds and storms.
The Milky Way
In the southern winter (roughly June to August) the bright centre of the Milky Way passes almost overhead at night, the most spectacular time for star beds and photography.
Watch the moon
Travel close to the new moon for the darkest skies. Around the full moon the stars fade, though moonlit dunes are beautiful in their own way. Tell us your dates and we check the moon for you.
Pack for the night
Desert nights get cold, especially from May to August. Bring a warm jacket and a beanie; star beds come with warm bedding. A red-light torch keeps your night vision.
