Why Moremi

A reserve the people of the Delta chose to protect.

In 1963, with hunting and cattle pushing deeper into their ancestral land, the BaTawana people, led by Mrs Elizabeth Pulane Moremi, set aside this corner of the Okavango as a game reserve. It is often described as the first reserve in Africa established by local residents, and it carries the name of Chief Moremi III.

Today Moremi covers the central and eastern Okavango Delta, including Chief's Island and the Moremi Tongue. Much of it is water: permanent channels, lagoons and seasonal floodplains that meet dry islands and mopane woodland. That meeting of land and water is what makes a Moremi safari feel so different from anywhere else in Africa.

Aerial view of mokoro channels in the Okavango Delta

Land and water in one day

Glide through papyrus channels by mokoro in the morning, then track lions across a floodplain in the afternoon. Few reserves give you both.

Predator country

Lion, leopard, cheetah and spotted hyena all hunt here, and Moremi is one of Africa's most important strongholds for the endangered African wild dog.

Chief's Island

The Delta's largest island, a former royal hunting ground, now holds some of Botswana's richest year-round game viewing.

Exceptional birding

Hundreds of species, from African fish eagles and Pel's fishing owls to breeding colonies of herons, storks and egrets.

Low volume by design

Botswana limits guest and vehicle numbers. Stay in a small camp and you will often have a sighting entirely to yourselves.

Easy to reach

Moremi sits just north of Maun. A short light-aircraft flight replaces hours of driving on sand roads.

Two ways to experience Moremi

Moremi is a protected game reserve with national park rules. The private concessions that border it share the same wildlife, but allow a wider range of activities. Many of our guests combine both.

The Moremi experience

What a day in Moremi feels like

Dawn

Coffee by the fire, then out as the light comes up, following fresh tracks across the floodplain.

Midday

Brunch in camp, a siesta on your deck, and elephants wandering past the waterhole.

Afternoon

A mokoro or boat outing where water allows, or a drive back to the morning's sighting.

Sunset

Drinks on an open floodplain. In the concessions, a night drive home under the stars.

When to travel

Moremi changes with the flood

Wildlife viewing is rewarding all year. Your travel month shapes which camps and activities we recommend.

Jan – Mar

Green season

Newborn animals, migrant birds, lush scenery and the year's lowest camp rates. Afternoon storms bring dramatic light.

Apr – May

Transition

Rains ease, days are mild and floodwater from the Angolan highlands begins to arrive in the Delta.

Jun – Aug

Peak flood

The flood usually peaks around July. Islands concentrate wildlife and mokoro trips are at their best. Cool mornings.

Sep – Dec

Dry heat to first rains

Hot, dry months draw animals to remaining water for intense game viewing. November brings the first rains.

Getting there

A short flight from Maun

Most Moremi safaris begin in Maun, the gateway to the Okavango, usually via Johannesburg. From there, Wilderness Air's seat-in-plane circuit flies you to your camp's own airstrip in well under an hour.

  • 14:45 Maun departure into the camps for guests arriving on international flights
  • 11:00–16:00 Window for flights between camps
  • 14:00–14:30 Kasane departure, for guests coming from Victoria Falls or Chobe

Exact times are confirmed by camp the night before. Light aircraft allow around 20 kg per person in a soft bag.

Questions

Moremi Game Reserve FAQs

Moremi is officially a game reserve, though many travellers call it Moremi National Park. It was set aside in 1963 by the BaTawana people and covers the central and eastern Okavango Delta, including Chief's Island.

Moremi combines dry-land game viewing with the Okavango's waterways, so you can track predators and glide through channels by mokoro on the same safari. It is also an important stronghold for the endangered African wild dog, and visitor numbers are kept deliberately low.

Inside the reserve, Mombo and Little Mombo offer some of Botswana's most celebrated game viewing on daytime drives. Bordering concessions such as Chitabe, Qorokwe and Mokete add night drives, guided walks and off-road tracking. Combining one of each gives you the best of both.

Three nights at one camp is a good minimum. Six nights across two contrasting camps, one land-based and one with water activities, shows you far more of the Delta.

June to October offers the classic dry-season safari, with the flood usually peaking around July. January to March is the green season, with newborn animals, excellent birding and the lowest camp rates.

Yes. Light aircraft connect Kasane, the gateway to Chobe, with the Moremi camps, and Kasane is a short road transfer from Victoria Falls. See our Victoria Falls & Okavango Delta journeys for ready-made routes.
