Why the Linyanti

Where the river meets the elephants.

The Linyanti Wildlife Reserve lies between the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park, along the Linyanti River that forms Botswana's border with Namibia's Caprivi Strip. Its lagoons, marshes and riverine forest are a lifeline for wildlife in the dry season.

From around June, as water disappears from the surrounding woodland, elephants walk in from far and wide. On the riverfront you may see well over 2,000 elephants gathering in a single season, along with buffalo, zebra and the predators that follow them. Because this is a private reserve, only a few camps share it, and your guide can drive at night, walk and follow wildlife off-road.

Elephant country

Some of the largest dry-season elephant gatherings in Africa, drinking, swimming and crossing the Linyanti channels.

Wild dogs and big cats

A stronghold for the endangered African wild dog, with lion prides, leopard in the riverine forest and spotted hyena.

Night drives

A private reserve, so you can drive after dark with red-filtered spotlights to find genets, porcupines, hyena and hunting cats.

Hides for photographers

Ground-level and underground hides at DumaTau and King's Pool put you eye to eye with drinking elephants.

Rare antelope

Sable and roan antelope, red lechwe and sitatunga, plus more than 450 bird species along the river.

The Savuti Channel

The reserve holds roughly two-thirds of the famous "vanishing river", which flows and dries over the decades.

How to explore the Linyanti

Ways to experience the reserve

The Linyanti is a private wildlife reserve rather than a national park, so the activities are far richer than in most parks. Programmes vary by camp, season and water levels.

The Linyanti experience

A day on the Linyanti

Dawn

Coffee by the fire, then out on fresh tracks: perhaps a wild dog pack on the move.

Midday

Brunch on the deck as elephant herds come down to drink and swim below camp.

Afternoon

Time in a hide at water level, or a quiet boat trip on the lagoon if the water allows.

After dark

Sundowners on the floodplain, then a night drive home under the spotlight.

When to travel

The Linyanti through the year

June to October is peak season, when wildlife crowds the river. The green season brings value, birds and newborn animals.

Jan – Mar

Green season

Lush, quiet and the lowest rates. Elephants spread into the woodland; birding and newborns are superb.

Apr – May

Transition

Rains end and the bush dries. Wildlife starts moving back towards the permanent water. Good value.

Jun – Aug

Cool and dry

Elephant numbers build along the river. Cold mornings, sunny days and excellent game viewing.

Sep – Oct

Peak concentrations

Hot and dry, with the biggest elephant gatherings and intense predator action at the water.
