Why the Okavango Delta

A safari built around wildlife, water and space.

The Okavango is not a single safari experience. Camp location determines whether your days are dominated by predator-rich game drives, seasonal floodplains, mokoro excursions, boating, or a combination of these. We use that difference to build a journey with contrast rather than simply booking two beautiful lodges.

Year-round safariWildlife changes with the seasons rather than disappearing outside one “perfect” month.
Peak floodThe annual inundation usually peaks around July and can extend into August.
Private concessionsSelected camps offer day and night game drives and more exclusive safari areas.
Water varies by campNot every Okavango camp offers mokoro or boating; water levels also affect availability.

Important family & activity note: Child ages, room-sharing rules, private-vehicle requirements and activity minimum ages vary by camp. In some camps, families travelling with younger children may require private activities or a private vehicle. Walking, mokoro, boating and other activities can also have separate age or operating restrictions. Tourgy Tourz confirms the correct family setup and activity eligibility before recommending or booking an itinerary.

When to travel

Botswana changes by season. That is part of the appeal.

Wildlife viewing is good throughout the year, but water, vegetation, temperature and animal behaviour change. Your dates should influence the camps we recommend.

January – February

Green season

Young animals, summer bird migrants, lush vegetation and excellent photographic colour. Predator activity remains a major part of the experience.

April – May

Transition season

Temperatures begin to cool, rainfall eases and vegetation starts drying as Botswana moves toward the dry season.

September – December

Dry heat to first rains

September and October become hotter and drier; November and December bring the first rains, new life, greener landscapes and excellent photography.

What your camp rate covers

Fully inclusive does most of the heavy lifting.

The Wilderness FI basis makes the on-safari experience straightforward. The main additional planning item is getting you between airports and remote camps.

How we build the trip

A professional itinerary, not a list of lodges.

We use the camps as building blocks, then add the flights, transfers and regional connections required to make the whole journey work.

01 • OKAVANGO ONLY

Two-camp Delta safari

Pair a wildlife-led land camp with a water-oriented camp so the second stay adds something genuinely different.

02 • CLASSIC SOUTHERN AFRICA

Understanding the Delta

The flood arrives in Botswana months after the rains fall in Angola.

The Okavango's annual inundation is unusual: water originating in the Angolan highlands moves through the river system and into Botswana, with peak Delta flooding usually around July and sometimes extending into August. This is why the best camp for water activities depends on both location and travel month.

Frequently asked questions

Planning a luxury Okavango safari

Wildlife viewing is rewarding throughout the year. June to August often coincides with high flood conditions, while September and October are hotter and drier. The best choice depends on your dates, preferred activities, wildlife priorities and the specific area of the Delta.

Mombo, Little Mombo and Chitabe, in and beside Moremi Game Reserve, are strong choices when terrestrial wildlife and predator viewing are priorities. The right camp still depends on travel dates, party size, accommodation preferences and whether you also want a contrasting water-oriented stay.

Little Vumbura and Vumbura Plains are strong choices when land-and-water experiences are important. Qorokwe can offer water activities when conditions allow. According to the current 2026 Wilderness trade portfolio supplied to Tourgy Tourz, Mombo, Little Mombo, Chitabe and Chitabe Lediba are treated as land-based camps without water activities. We confirm the expected activity programme for your travel dates before finalising the itinerary.

No. The displayed rates cover the Wilderness fully inclusive camp basis. Flights and transfers between airports and remote camps are separately quoted and incorporated into your complete Tourgy Tourz itinerary.

Three nights is a useful starting point for one camp. Around five to six nights across two contrasting camps can work particularly well when you want both wildlife-led game drives and a different Delta environment or water-based experience.

Yes. Okavango and Victoria Falls is a natural Southern Africa combination (see our Victoria Falls & Okavango Delta journeys), while Cape Town adds food, wine, culture and coastline before or after safari. We plan the sequence around flight schedules, camp availability and the pace you want for the complete journey.
